Why am I Selling My Business?

One question that gets asked time and time again by our purchasers is “why are they selling their business?”

Before making an offer, buyers want to know what they are getting themselves into and if the seller doesn’t want the business anymore, what are the chances the buyer doesn’t want it either.

We understand that our sellers have very genuine reasons for exiting out of their business so it is important that you share your motivations for selling with those who may potentially make an offer. The most common reason is that owners have invested years into their business to get it to the level it is today and are looking for a change of scenery. You’re proud of what you have built and achieved and feel now is the time to pass the torch over.

Another common reason people wish to “sell my business” is to cash up and use that equity to invest into other business ventures. This can ring alarm bells for some buyers especially if you’re looking at setting up in a similar industry and pose a threat. You will need to be prepared for this and possibly re-look at your future plans and enter into an unrelated industry.

Of course there are less positive reasons for selling; declining revenues, negative industry changes, disputes or financial reasons but it is important to be up-front and honest with your salesperson who can help turn a negative into a positive because no matter what your reasons are for selling, no doubt we’ve heard them before.

You’ve worked hard over the years and we want to help you achieve the maximum for your business come time to sell. So, our advice to you, if you’re thinking of selling, jot down your reasons as to why and if there’s something you can change to make the business more saleable, go for it.
